This is the Acupoints section of CMD, which presents 400 or so channel and nonchannel points with location, classical location, local anatomy, indications, traditional indications, needling depth, stimulus, and point groups they belong to, and the meanings of their Chinese names. Links to the Dictionary table are provided.

    • Click Channel to access information in the Dictionary about the channel of interest.
    • Click on Acupoints to see a preview list of all the points on the channel. Just click on the one that interests you.

Searches

  • First, select Headword only or Headword and Text depending on whether you wish to search in the heading of an entry/article or through the heading and the text below it.
  • Then, in the search box, enter alphanumeric codes (e.g., LU-1), unaccented Pīnyīn, simplified Chinese or traditional Chinese, or English (literal translation of the point name).
    Note that joined-up Pīnyīn can be used to search for headwords, but not the whole text.
  • After entering your search word(s), you will see the Search Results appear. You can select
    • Starting with to give you headwords that start with your search string or
    • Containing to give headwords that contain (or the text of which contains) your search string.
  • A filter box below Results allows you to insert another search string to narrow your search. So, for example, if your search string is blood vacuity, you can add headache in the filter box. To find all acupoints in which blood vacuity and headache both appear, either in the headword or headword and text, depending on which selection you have made.

  • The texts include copious links to the Dictionary table.
  • For those studying Chinese, each character of the Chinese headword is linked to the Terms table, where examples of its use can be found, together with links to stroke order animations.

LI, Hand Yáng Brightness (yáng míng) Large Intestine Channel Points

  • LI-1 商阳 〔商陽〕shāng yáng, Shāng Yáng
    Modern location: A little more than 1 fēn below the base of the nail on the radial side of the index finger.
    Modern indications: Deafness; toothache; painful swollen throat; clear-eye blindness; swelling of the submandibular region; numbness and tingling of the fingers; febrile disease; clouding reversal (loss of consciousness).
  • LI-2 二间 〔二間〕èr jiān, Second Space
    Modern location: On the radial aspect of the index finger, immediately distal to the metacarpophalangeal (mcp) joint, at the border of the red and white flesh.
    Modern indications: Clouded vision; nosebleed; toothache; deviated eyes and mouth; painful swollen throat; febrile disease.
  • LI-3 三间 〔三間〕sān jiān, Third Space
    Modern location: On the radial aspect of the hand, just proximal to the head of the second metacarpal bone.
    Modern indications: Eye pain; toothache; painful swollen throat; generalized heat effusion; abdominal fullness; redness and swelling of the fingers and backs of the hands.
  • LI-4 合谷 〔合谷〕hé gǔ, Union Valley
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the hand, on the radial side of the second metacarpal bone, inferior to the midpoint of the bone (i.e., under the bone).
    Modern indications: Headache; painful red swollen eyes; nosebleed; toothache; clenched jaw; deviated eyes and mouth; deafness; painful swollen throat; mumps; hypertonicity of the fingers; pain in the arm; febrile disease with absence of sweating or profuse sweating; abdominal pain; constipation; amenorrhea; difficult delivery.
  • LI-5 阳溪 〔陽谿〕yáng xī, Yáng Ravine
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the wrist, proximal to the base of the thumb, in the anatomical snuffbox.
    Modern indications: Headache; painful red swollen eyes; deafness; tinnitus; toothache; painful swollen throat; wrist pain.
  • LI-6 偏历 〔偏歷〕piān lì, Veering Passageway
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the forearm, on the lateral edge of the radius, 3 cùn proximal to the wrist (LI-5) on the line that connects LI-5 (chǐ zé) and LI-11(tài yuān).
    Modern indications: Red eyes; tinnitus; nosebleed; painful larynx; aching of the hand and arm; water swelling.
  • LI-7 温溜 〔溫溜〕wēn liū, Warm Dwelling
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the forearm, on the lateral edge of the radius, 5 cùn proximal to the wrist (LI-5) on the line that connects LI-5 and LI-11.
    Modern indications: Headache; facial swelling; painful swollen throat; clove sores (dīng chuāng); rumbling intestines and abdominal pain; aching of the shoulder and arm.
  • LI-8 下廉 〔下廉〕xià lián, Lower Ridge
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the forearm, 4 cùn distal to the elbow (LI-11) on the line that connects LI-5 and LI-11.
    Modern indications: Headache; dizziness; eye pain; pain in the elbow and arm; rumbling intestines; abdominal pain.
  • LI-9 上廉 〔上廉〕shàng lián, Upper Ridge
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the forearm, 3 cùn distal to the elbow (LI-11) on the line that connects LI-5 (yáng xī) and LI-11 (qū chí).
    Modern indications: Headache; aching shoulder and arm; hemiplegia; numbness and tingling of the hand and arm; rumbling intestines and abdominal pain.
  • LI-10 手三里 〔手三里〕shǒu sān lǐ, Arm Three Lǐ
    Modern location: On the dorsoradial aspect of the forearm, 2 cùn distal to the elbow (LI-11) on the line that connects LI-5 (yáng xī) and LI-11 (qū chí).
    Modern indications: Toothache with swollen cheeks; abdominal pain; diarrhea; aching in the shoulder and upper arm; paralysis of the upper limbs.
  • LI-11 曲池 〔曲池〕qū chí, Pool at the Bend
    Modern location: On the lateral aspect of the elbow, in the depression at the lateral end of the transverse cubital crease, just distal to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus.
    Modern indications: Painful swollen throat; toothache; painful red eyes; scrofula; febrile disease; pain in the elbow and arm; paralysis of the upper limbs; abdominal pain; vomiting and retching; high blood pressure; mania and withdrawal.
  • LI-12 肘髎 〔肘髎〕zhǒu liáo, Elbow Bone-Hole
    Modern location: On the lateral aspect of the upper arm, about 1.5 cùn directly superior to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus, on the anterior edge of the lateral head of the triceps brachii muscle.
    Modern indications: Pain, hypertonicity, and numbness and tingling of the elbow and arm.
  • LI-13 手五里 〔手五里〕shǒu wǔ lǐ, (Arm) Five Lǐ
    Modern location: On the lateral aspect of the upper arm, 3 cùn superior to the lateral epicondyle of the humerus on the line connecting LI-11 (qū chí) and LI-15 (jiān yú).
    Modern indications: Hypertonicity and pain in the elbow and arm; scrofula.
  • LI-14 臂臑 〔臂臑〕bì nào, Upper Arm
    Modern location: On the lateral aspect of the upper arm, superior to the insertion of the deltoid muscle on the humerus, about 2 cùn inferior to the level of the anterior axillary fold on the line connecting LI-11 (qū chí) and LI-15 (jiān yú).
    Modern indications: Shoulder and arm pain; stiff nape and neck; scrofula; eye diseases.
  • LI-15 肩髃 〔肩髃〕jiān yú, Shoulder Bone
    Modern location: On the lateral aspect of the shoulder, inferior to the acromioclavicular articulation, between the anterior and medial portions of the deltoid muscle, in the most anterior of the depressions that form when the arm is abducted.
    Modern indications: Hypertonicity, pain, or paralysis of the shoulder and arm; stiff neck and nape; dormant papules; scrofula.
  • LI-16 巨骨 〔巨骨〕jù gǔ, Great Bone
    Modern location: On the superior aspect of the shoulder, medial and slightly posterior to the bony prominence of the acromioclavicular articulation, in the depression at the lateral end of the supraspinous fossa.
    Modern indications: Hypertonicity, pain, or paralysis of the shoulder and upper arm; scrofula; goiter.
  • LI-17 天鼎 〔天鼎〕tiān dǐng, Celestial Tripod
    Modern location: On the anterolateral aspect of the neck, superior to the midpoint of the supraclavicular fossa, on the posterior border of the sternocleidomastoid (scm) muscle.
    Modern indications: Loss of voice; painful swollen throat; scrofula; goiter.
  • LI-18 扶突 〔扶突〕fú tú, Protuberance Assistant
    Modern location: On the anterolateral aspect of the neck, level with the tip of the laryngeal prominence (adam's apple), between the sternal and clavicular heads of the sternocleidomastoid (scm) muscle.
    Modern indications: Cough and panting; painful swollen throat; loss of voice; scrofula; goiter.
  • LI-19 禾髎 〔禾髎〕hé liáo, Grain Bone-Hole
    Modern location: Superior to the upper lip, over a slight depression in the maxilla inferior to the medial margin of the ala nasi, at the level of GV-26.
    Modern indications: Nasal congestion; sniveling nose; nosebleed; deviated mouth; clenched jaw.
  • LI-20 迎香 〔迎香〕yíng xiāng, Welcome Fragrance
    Modern location: Beside the nostril, in the nasolabial groove, level with the midpoint of the lateral margin of the ala nasi.
    Modern indications: Nasal congestion; nosebleed; sniveling nose; deviated mouth; facial itching; facial swelling.
